A day in life with Evelyn
Introducing Evelyn, our Welfare and Income Assistant. In this article, Evelyn gives us an insight into what a typical day looks like for her, and what she can do to support you.
Tell us more about your role
My role is all about supporting our residents with managing their finances and accessing the right benefits and services to help ease financial pressure.
Whether it’s helping with Universal Credit or Housing Benefit applications, offering advice on budgeting, or connecting residents to vital resources like food banks or fuel assistance, I’m here to make sure residents aren’t navigating these challenges alone. I also work closely with various external support organisations, ensuring our residents receive the help they need to maintain financial stability and wellbeing.
What does a typical day look like for you?
As a Welfare and Income Assistant, no two days are the same, but each day is filled with opportunities to make a difference. My mornings usually start by checking in on emails and reviewing any urgent cases that need immediate attention. This might involve helping residents apply for benefits like Universal Credit or Housing Benefit, addressing rent arrears, or connecting people with local food banks or fuel assistance schemes.
Throughout the day, I’m in close communication with residents, either by phone, email, or face-to-face meetings. Some residents need help navigating the complexities of the benefits system, while others simply need someone to talk to about their financial concerns. I also collaborate with my colleagues and external organisations to ensure that our residents are accessing all available support.
In between my contact with residents, I spend time updating records, following up on ongoing cases, and reviewing new policies or funding opportunities that might benefit our community. My day often ends with planning for the next, making sure everything is in place to continue offering the best support possible. It’s a rewarding role, and even though some days are challenging, knowing that I’m making a positive impact in people’s lives keeps me motivated.
How did you get into the housing sector?
I stumbled into the housing sector by chance, but it has become a true calling for me. With a background in both the medical and teaching fields, I had just graduated from university, fully expecting to pursue a career in education. I’ve always worked in community settings, passionate about supporting and empowering people.
One day, a family friend sent me a job opening for a Welfare and Income Assistant at ccha. As I read through the job role, I instantly felt a connection. Growing up in social housing and relying on benefits, I understand the struggles many residents face.
I knew I could relate to their experiences and wanted to provide the kind of help that I needed when I found myself in challenging situations. Whether it’s offering practical assistance or simply being a friendly voice on the phone, I know how much it means to feel seen and heard.
That’s the difference I strive to make every day. As Maya Angelou once said, “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” I hope to leave a positive impact on every resident I work with.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
In my spare time, I’m all about spending quality moments with the people I love. Whether it’s exploring museums, trying new foods, or simply hanging out with my family, I believe it’s important to make time for the things and people that bring you joy. Life is for living, and I’m learning to enjoy it more each day. I also love my early nights! As much as I enjoy being out and about, you can bet I’ll be home by 8pm and in bed by 9pm sharp. Let’s face it, nothing beats a good night’s sleep! Finding that balance between fun and rest is key, and I’m all about making time for both.

Here’s something you might not guess just by looking at me—I’m actually a good footballer! I’ve been playing football since I was young, and trust me, I can surprise you on the pitch. I may not look like I’d be the one scoring goals, but don’t be fooled—I’ve got some serious skills! So, if we ever need to settle something over a game of five-a-side, just know I’m ready to bring my A-game!
