How communities can help your wellbeing

When people feel like they belong, they’re more likely to care about where they live and the people around them. That feeling of connection can help and make neighbourhoods feel safer and more respectful.

Joining in with local events, clubs, or volunteering can help people feel involved. It’s a chance to make friends, feel heard, and know that you matter. For young people especially, having something positive to focus on can make a big difference.

Tips on getting involved in your community

It’s the little things we do each day that help build trust and a sense of belonging. These moments can have a big impact on how you feel and how connected you are to the people around you.

1

Engage with local services

Many GP surgeries now offer access to social prescribers who can link you with local services, support groups, or activities based on your interests and wellbeing needs. They’re a great starting point if you’re not sure what’s available or what might suit you.

2

Voluntary work

Volunteering can be a great way to meet people and feel more rooted in your area. Whether it’s helping at a food bank, supporting local charities, or lending a hand at community events, giving your time can bring a real sense of purpose.

3

Free events

Activities like Parkrun or community fun days offer a relaxed and inclusive space to get active and meet others. They’re usually free and open events for all ages and abilities, so you can take part in a way that feels right for you.

4

Join groups

Do you enjoy gardening, reading, crafts, sport or cooking? There’s likely to be a local group or club that brings people together around those shared interests. These groups can be a great way to meet like-minded neighbours and grow your confidence.

5

Greet your neighbours

A simple smile or greeting can go a long way. Even short conversations in shared spaces can help you feel more at home and build trust with the people around you.

6

Communal areas

Spending time in shared spaces, creates more chances for natural interactions with your fellow community.

7

Online community

Many neighbourhoods have Facebook or WhatsApp groups where you can stay updated on local news, events and opportunities to get involved.

We’re here to support you not just with a place to live, but with the chance to feel part of a community to improve mental health.

Don’t hesitate to take a step. Reach out, say hello, or come along to something local. You never know how much it might brighten your day, or someone else’s.

If you’d like our support in funding an event for you and your neighbours, contact us on 020 8680 7532 or freephone 0800 054 6710 to discuss our President’s Fund.

If you’d like to discuss your mental health, our wellbeing team we can refer you to Mind, Age UK and a few GP surgeries which have a social prescriber.
